New security indicators will be presented in Firefox 70 and will reduce the visual significance of EV SSL certificates and draw more attention to sites accessed through an insecure HTTP protocol.

Google developers abandoned EV indicators back in September with the release of Chrome 77. The same thing will be done to the Firefox 70 browser: the green lock will become grey and the company name will disappear from the address bar of the browser.

As with Chrome, EV certificate information is still available, but users now need to click the lock to open the panel with information about the site.

In Firefox, the “information” icon to the left of the lock will no longer be displayed. This functionality is now built into the lock itself. If the site is passed over insecure FTP or HTTP protocols, the lock will be crossed out. Previously, this icon was displayed only for pages requiring data input and passed over HTTP; now this icon will be displayed for all HTTP and FTP pages.

Also, a new shield icon will appear in Firefox 70 to show whether new anti-tracking features are enabled or disabled in the browser. A grey shield indicates that protection is enabled (but not yet used), a purple shield indicates that protection was used for the current page, and a crossed-out shield indicates that protection is disabled.
