Weird and forgotten domains

Since the 1990s, ICANN has endorsed more than 1,300 different domain names. And that's the point: the vast majority of them were unpopular, left in the shadows, or completely closed from free registration.

Bad ideas

Today, the arrival of new TLDs is minimized, so we have the opportunity to take our breath and evaluate whether ICANN's decisions have been successful. At once we would like to say that in most cases it is not so - the Internet is full of top-level domains that have never found their buyer. Unsuccessful TLDs include those that cause malware associations, confuse users, or result from an unsuccessful marketing decision. No, well, seriously - what did companies that launched .RIP, .GOO or .PING domains expect?

Unpopular solutions

Amazon has long planned to launch a .BOOK domain, but they did not expect a single site to be their customer. Yes, the only one. Generally, more than 25% of all domains in the network are used by only one site - this fact raises the question of the expediency of their launch. Either ICANN was too liberal for new registrants, or companies applying for specific TLDs were too naive. The inability of the .PLAY and .LIKE domains to capture even a fraction of the public's interest is extremely baffling - because they have been registered by organizations that are already well versed on the Internet.

Branded domains

The stronger the company, the stronger it has to declare itself and at the same time protect itself from third-party plagiarism. Many top brands apply to ICANN to create their own domain that will not be openly registered - as did Samsung, Lego, Nike, Nikon, Visa and other notable giants. This decision does not initially allow sites with these TLDs to appear on the Internet, since they are intended to register only one website. It's not a fact that any of them give up their classic .COM domain sites, but the point here is to just take a domain with your brand.

Will there be consequences?

The large number of failed TLDs has created significant problems for ICANN (not least for security), as some domains are clearly in doubt. Studies show that some areas contain up to 99.95% of websites with spyware or pop-ups. 20 years after its creation, ICANN needs to make some important decisions and understand what to do with such domain zones and set a tighter framework for potential registrants.

This does not mean that a site on a particular domain will be more dangerous than another one, but different phishing scams designed for inattentive users always carry an additional risk.
